Destination Inspiration - November - Terminal #2

Hello fellow travelers, S@ndy here to welcome you to this week's stop.  When we arrived at Terminal 1,  last week, we were treated to this lovely creation by Julia.

This week our bags are packed with the same tools but have arrived in a totally different way.  Just so you know what's in the bag -

Product:  Idea-ology ribbon or jute
Technique: Smudge Stamping  CC Vol. 3 Page 42
Color:  Rusty Hinge
Substrate:  Card

I decided to make mine a tribute to FALL.  Here in the US it seems we go from Halloween straight to Christmas and sort of miss out on the fall colors and beauty of the season.  Hope you enjoy my make for this portion of the journey.

ALL ABOARD!

This home décor piece showcases all the muted colors usually associated with fall.

Fall always congers up images of pumpkins and beautifully colored leaves and I have incorporated all of that in this piece that can double as a card. I used the Rectangle Accordion Album designed by Karen Burniston for Elizabeth Craft Designs for the base so it folds up flat for mailing.

Here's how I did it -

I first choose my colors from Stampin Up papers, Old Olive, Pumpkin Pie, Cajun Craze and
So Saffron.

I cut the 4 panels from Old Olive

The 4 inner panels cut from So Saffron were stamped with Distress Ink -Rusty Hinge from Ranger and then the Smudge Stamping method was used.  To find out more about this method of stamping you can see the details in Tim's Compendium Of Curiosities Vol. 3 Page 42

The stamped panels were attached to the frames and then they were all connected with the tabs that are on the edge of each panel.

The lettering was cut with the Sizzix Die Set, Serif Essentials, from the Cajun Craze paper which is the same color as Rusty Hinge Die Ink.  The letters were then attached to the stamped panel.

2 additional panels were cut from the green, scored at 1/2" on one side to attach to each end of the other panels.  The other outside edge was cut with the Distress Doily "On The Edge" Die from Sizzix from Tim's collection. These panels were also embossed.

Edging is so important in a project like this.  It gives everything that vintage look.  I used Distress Inks, Vintage Photo and Rusty Hinge for all edging.

Many different fall related pieces were cut for this project.  Using the Mini Pumpkin & Acorn Set, the Mini Flourish both from Tim's collection by Sizzix.

One large pumpkin from the Pumpkin Parts die from Tim Holtz & Sizzix, then embossed with the Woodgrain Texture Fade.  Finally edged with Vintage Photo.

The word "beautiful from the Adventure Word Set from the Tim Holtz collection.

Some jute from Tim's idea-ology collection.  Two more pumpkins were added from the Pumpkins, Cat, Crows and Web die set from Sizzix.

Branches were made from Tim's  Tree Branch Die and then cut apart as needed. More leaves and accent pieces were made with the Pumpkin Die from Elizabeth Craft Designs.

After attaching the inside panels together using the tabs on the die - it stands up beautifully.  I must admit that I should have decorated before attaching the tabs but I wasn't really sure where I was going to place all the pieces so I had to play a bit before I added glue and to make sure I didn't add a decoration in a place that would prevent the panels from closing properly.  After arranging the pieces a bit - I glued everything in place.

It has been my pleasure to be your guide for this part of the journey and I hope you have enjoyed traveling along as well.  Don't forget to join us again next week for the next leg of the journey when
Annie will be your guide

Have a creative week and enjoy the journey,

Art Journalling Winner, Pinworthies, and Guest Day

Hello everyone and welcome to our wonderful day where we celebrate our Winner and Pinworthies from the Art Journalling With Tim challenge, as well as welcoming another amazing Guest Creative Guide to join us on the journey.

There were some really amazing entries last month, and there was such variety too.  You definitely combined Tim techniques and products with your own journalling styles to create some exciting and meaningful artwork.  I thoroughly enjoyed visiting each and every single journal spread, and it was really hard for us to pick out favourites.

But before we get to the big announcement, we're delighted to welcome the lovely Rachel of Fisher's Cards and Crafts as our Guest Creative Guide this month, and she has some more inspiration for our exciting challenge, Baby You're a Firework!
________________________

Hello there! Well I feel very honoured to be here having been lucky enough to win the 'Things with Wings' challenge set by the lovely Anne in August. Here's a little bit about me!

My name is Rachel Fisher and I am a full time mum to my two daughters Lucy and Penny and spend much of my time running around after them - and doing the usual mum things. We lost my husband Shaun, the girls' father, in January and are still getting used to him not being here with us.
We stay positive though - its what Shaun would want!
I love to run and swim and go to the gym but i also love my crafting which has become an increasing source of comfort. I love to make cards but mixed media is fast becoming my favourite thing of all. I spend a lot of time blogging about my makes at my blog and would love for you to visit me if you feel inspired!

This month's theme is 'Baby You're a Firework' - well I was at a bit of a loss at first but them I had a think and i thunk this might be okay - so I went ahead and made a house complete with its own firework backdrop.

I started by cutting Tim's village dwelling in hardboard that I get from the picture framers. It makes things so much more sturdy and if you ask nicely you might get it for free!

Next I inked up Tim's brick stencil using Rusty Hinge and cut the house shapes out again.

I stuck them to the sides of the house once it was assembled. I also cut roof shapes from red card and added tiles freehand using a fineliner pen.

The house base I painted with Hickory Smoke Distress Paint then added spritz using the Distress Marker tool. I also added a Tim Christmas tree that I already had coloured up.

For the fireworks I folder a piece of black card and stamped the Visible Image stamps in Versamark onto it, then added gold or white embossing powder and heat set. I also flicked it with white paint to make it look less uniform.

This is the finished piece. Its such a great die and I intend to use it to make gifts for the teachers at Christmas. I think I won't stick the roof down at the back and then I will fill it with some chocolates!!! I hope this gives you a little inspiration for the challenge.  Go on - join us!
Hugs, Rachel xx

What a fantastic interpretation of the challenge, Rachel - I love the fireworks exploding over the little house!  Thanks so much for sharing such a great creation with us.

And now on to the Art Journalling With Tim Winner and Pinworthies. First of all, here's our randomly chosen winner who will receive the prize voucher from our sponsor, Country View Crafts.

#2 Susan Janicula of klistersøster

Congratulations Susan!
Your page has such beautiful collaged ephemera over a wonderful background.  We hope you will be a Guest Creative Guide with us here in the future, and your voucher and winner's badge will be with you very soon.

Now on to the Pinworthies and, as I said, this was no easy decision to make.  But we had to whittle it down to three and here they are,
in no particular order.

There's an amazing blend of colours in the beautiful background and I love all the natural elements - the stencilling, choice of stamps, and the use of the Wallflower papers - in this lovely, gentle page.

Beulah Bee did the double with these two spreads in one post - too hard to pick between them!  Each of them uses stamping, colours and papers to create their atmosphere.

Impossible to leave out this incredible personal page with its powerful message - and since she mentioned it herself, I hope Mary Elizabeth won't mind me saying that's her own brain in the monster's head!

Congratulations all round!
Your badges and invitations will be on their way to you very soon.
I'd like to say another big thank you to all the entrants...
I honestly think you're all Pinworthy!

Destination Inspiration - November - Terminal #1

All Aboard at Terminal #1!   Greetings fellow Vintage Journey travelers!  Julia here today as your AVJ Creative Guide for this week's Destination Inspiration journey!  We always travel light on these journies - and for the next 4 Mondays in November our travel trunks will contain these 4 essential items:
1.  Product - Idea-ology Ribbon or Jute
2.  Technique - Smudge Stamping - Compendium of Curiosities Vol 3 pg 42
3.  Color - Rusty Hinge
4.  Substrate - a Card
I went a little dimensional with my card today - using Tim's Acorn Blueprint Framelits along with a mix of Rusty  Hinge and Ground Espresso Distress Inks for fall.  The technique we are using this month is Smudge Stamping.  First I stamped my image on a piece of Ranger Specialty Paper and then immediately rubbed over the image with a clean sponge - giving it a great smudged look! (I tried regular card stock first but the ink dried before I could "smudge" it!! Lesson learned!)
Next I stamped one of the Ledger Script stamps in Rusty Hinge around the Acorn stamping and smudged that in the same manner. (I later cut my panel down to 4"x4".)
I stamped the acorn a few more times on pieces of Specialty Paper using the same technique of smudging and die cut the individual pieces.
I layered them over the panel with different thicknesses of foam dots (more under the 'hat' of the acorn, less under the side piece), added a piece of Regions Beyond Tissue Tape on the left side, adhered a piece of Linen Ribbon (sponged with Rusty Hinge) behind the sentiment - attaching it with sweet little Star Fasteners. I layered the whole panel to a slightly larger panel of brown cardstock and layered that to my Rustic Cream card base.  Final card size 4 1/4" x 4 1/4".
Here are a few close ups to show the layering.
Lovely colors for the fall season - don't you think?! I hope you have enjoyed your journey with me today at Terminal #1.  We always appreciate your traveling along with us on A Vintage Journey!  Thank you so much for stopping by!

Baby You're a Firework

Hi everyone and welcome to the next leg of our journey. Nikki here and it is my pleasure to accompany you. Before we introduce our November challenge I hope you will join me in welcoming our three new Creative Guides. We welcome:

Amanda Pink - Ink-A-Pink from the United Kingdom

Deb Riddell - Paxton valley Folk Art  from Canada

Olga Kolov - Scrap Forever  from Germany

We very much look forward to seeing their creations over the coming weeks, but in the meantime please do hop over to see their fabulous blogs.

------------------------------

The theme this month is:

Baby You're A Firework

With fireworks such a big part of the celebrations at this time of the year we are looking for you to create a Tim style project inspired by them. This may be using glitter, bold colours or ink and paint splats. Go on be creative, have some fun and light up that night sky!

As usual we do not expect your projects to be Tim Holtz product based, but just to be inspired by him. Please do visit our Travelling Instructions for more information.

Our challenge is a monthly one and a randomly chosen winner will receive a £20 gift voucher from our generous sponsor, Country View Crafts. We also award our Pinworthy badges to the Top 3, chosen by the Creative Guides who are subsequently invited to join us on the blog as a guest designer.

The team had to get their thinking caps on for this one, but have some fantastic and inspirational projects to kick off the challenge.

-----------------------------------------------

Nikki
I used one of my favourite techniques on this card to highlight the colour of the distress inks in my night sky! Do pop over to Addicted to Art for all the details.

I started thinking about this challenge weeks ago wondering what I was going to make but once the Sparkles texture fade dropped through the letterbox I was off. The shape of the twinkles looked just like fireworks to me and I've added lots of bold colour and glitter too.

My favourite fireworks are always the white ones.  If I had my way, there wouldn't be any other colours (well, maybe the occasional golden one is allowed!).  I've used a reversed 12x12 canvas to create my 3D scene and some tiny real lights to create the vivid explosion of light at the heart of each firework.  It's another one which is hard to capture in one photo, so do come over to Words and Pictures to see the details.

Living in the country our night sky is not polluted by street lights so any fireworks are always gorgeously bright against the darkness of the sky and stars. So I tried to recreate this feeling with a black gesso and texture paste background and rosettes made from Tim's rosette dies.  The rosettes are made from painted strips of white paper  (Rusty Hinge and Barn Door Distress Paints) with the paint pulled in one direction which transfers to the rosettes and looks as though they are spinning (which is very difficult to photograph!). Please hop on over to Live the Dream if you want to see some more details.

What a great way to celebrate a holiday, with fireworks.  I wish it was our tradition in the US as well.
I decided on a journal entry for this one.  I used lots of Tim's goodies here to light up the night sky.
Please stop by my blog: My "Crafty" Life On The Internet to see how I did it.

I absolutely love fireworks and the wonderful array of colours that light up the night sky.
Here you can see  how I tried to create that effect using a stamp and various colours of sparkling embossing powders from my stash, which were then heat embossed. Of course I had to add some stamping and Distress Inks too.....for more details pop over to my blog HERE xx
Looking forward to viewing you amazing entries xx

It's been a while since I played in my journal and this was too good an opportunity to miss. Disaster almost struck when printing out a photo of the London New Year fireworks display - the printer ran out of ink and resulted in an unusual effect! Turning it into a positive I went with those bold colours and created a firework display around them. See my blog for a step by step tutorial.

With the celebratory aspect of fireworks in mind, I decided to make a birthday card for my hubby using Tim's hilarious Bird Crazy stamps, Crazy Accessories stamps and lots of Distress inks, sprays and Distress Stickles.  Come on over to my blog to see what mayhem ensues inside the card once that firework goes off!

-------------------------------------

I so hope you will join in this fun challenge! Don't forget, it is not about using Tim Holtz products, just to be inspired by him in some way.
You have until Thursday 3rd December to enter and we will then select our random winner who will win a £20 voucher at Country View Crafts and our Pinworthies who we look forward to welcoming as guest designers. You can find all the Creative Guide projects, guest designers, pinworthies and winners on our Pinterest boards.

Good luck
Nikki

Destination Inspiration - Terminal 5

Hello Tracy here and welcome to Terminal 5, our last stop in our October Journey.

So what do we have in our bag to inspire you:
Product: Distress Spray Stain
Technique: Layering Stencil Embossing
(Compendium of Curiosities III p.50)
Colour: Hickory Smoke
Substrate: A Tag
I decided to create a tag accordion to give me a little more space to create.
  1. Die cut a tag from scrap card using the Tim Holtz Tag and Bookplates Die.
  2. Draw around the tag onto white card to create the accordion and score at the centre points.
  3. Die cut three separate tags to decorate and add to the accordion piece.
  1.  Take each die cut tag and place the Rays Layering Stencil onto each tag and then follow the step by steps on page 50 of the Compendium of Curiosities for the Layering Stencil Embossing Technique.
  2. Spritz each of the tags with Hickory Smoke Distress Spray Stain and dab dry with a piece of kitchen towel.
  3. Apply Hickory Smoke Distress Ink to the edges of each tag.
  1.  Stamp the flower and stem from Tim Holtz Flower Garden Stamp Set onto the background of each tag using Watering Can Archival Ink and then stamp the flowers once again onto a separate piece of card.
  2. Apply Hickory Smoke Distress Paint onto the rim of a lid, simply apply using a finger and then press the lid over the stamped image to add a circle of paint to the design, adding a further layer of interest and then dry with a heat tool.
  3. Apply a touch of Fossilized Amber Distress Paint to a non-stick craft sheet and then swipe an old credit card through the paint and then press the card onto the background of each tag to add scratch lines and then dry with a heat tool.
  1. Colour a piece of scrap card with Hickory Smoke Distress Ink and then die cut the wording "Beautiful" from the card using the Tim Holtz Handwritten Love Thinlits Die Set.
  2. Take three lengths of vintage ribbon, apply Fossilized Amber Distress Ink to a non-stick craft sheet, spritz with water and mop up the beads of ink with the ribbon; repeat this process until the ribbon is coloured to coordinate with the card and then dry with a heat tool, scrunching the ribbon as you dry. Add the ribbon to the top of each tag.
  1. Colour each of the flowers with a Fossilized Amber Distress Marker. Cut out each of the flowers and then add them to the tags for dimension.
  2. Colour a piece of scrap card with Hickory Smoke Distress Ink and then die cut hearts from the card using the Tim Holtz Shape Strips Die and adhere these pieces to the tags.

Let's review the inspiration to date:

At Terminal 1 we have a floral delight from Jennie
At Terminal 2 we have Autumnal Inspiration from Astrid
At Terminal 3 we have Julie who inspires us to start on our festive makes
At Terminal 4 we have Anne who created a spooky tag to celebrate her favourite time of year

What will be packed in the travel bag in November?  And how will each Creative Guide use the components to fuel our onward Vintage Journey? You'll just have to come back each Monday to find out... Bon Voyage!

Pop back on Friday for our new Vintage Journey challenge with Nikki.
