Destination Inspiration - Tissue Techniques

I love using tissue as you can alter and decorate an item quickly and give a variety of finishes from a soft ethereal to very vintage rustic effects

I also love the fact that that it’s very forgiving and allows you to stamp and position freely and overlay and use it on a variety of textured surfaces

Many of us have used Tim’s own tissue wrap, a wonderful product but with so many of his fabulous stamps it’s great to make your own

So today I'm going to show you a few projects using some of my favourite techniques

For my first project, I'm going to use tissue stamping to decorate a flat surface on a 

Christmas Decoration

I applied light brush strokes of white gesso randomly to a wooden star; I wanted some of the wood grain to still show through

I stamped onto plain white tissue paper using black Stazon Ink and heat set

Once dry start to tear the tissue as I like the rough edges and arranged

Apply a coat of Matte medium to the gesso surface and apply the tissue and cover this with Matt medium too, smoothing with the brush apply liberally and allow to soak through the tissue this results in an also invisible edge

I also applied plain torn stripes of tissue over the stamped tissue to make the stamping softer in areas

I finished spraying around the edges with the fantastic Distress Sprays Stain Brushed Pewter to finish my Christmas star

As many of you know I love texture and a great way to get stamped images onto a textured surface is with Tissue

For this next project I started applying a coat of gesso to a box and 

then applied Grunge Paste to the lid

Once dry I started applying Distress Stains to the top and sides

I then applied the stamped tissue to the sides applying matte medium to the surface and a coat over the tissue

I also did this with the lid, but because the surface is uneven apply more matte medium and rub with your finger

This creates the most fabulous vintage textured appearance

Once dry I used DecoArt Quinacridone Gold and Burnt Umber Acrylic paint very lightly to distress the edges

Finished with a coat of Media Satin Varnish, this is optional I like it as it makes the appearance look like wood patina

You can also add texture by stamping into the modelling paste

 Apply a coat of gesso to a chipboard ornament shape, and a thin layer of modelling paste

 Approximately 1mm thickness

 Once this has formed a skin,I stamped into it with a script stamp

The results are always random and it is just another way to introduce texture

 Once dry, stamp onto tissue and apply as before

I decided to introduce more texture by applying a crackle glaze to the surface 

and let dry for a couple of hours

 Finished by rubbing black acrylic into the cracks and wiping back in the centre and applied Distress Stain Brushed Pewter to the edges and back

I made a few more and threaded some silver ribbon ready to go on the tree
