Hello everyone and thank you for stopping by. It's Deb here with you today as we pull into terminal number two on our Destination Inspiration journey for June. If you recall from Annie's post last Monday, our travel bags have been packed with the following supplies this month.
I couldn't decide which resist technique to use for my project so finally decided to make a little resist techniques book out of coasters using as many shades of orange as I could.
I pulled out my Creative Chemistry books volumes I & III by Tim Holtz and revisited some tried and true resist techniques, come along for the ride!
I started with beer coasters courtesy of my local pub and decided to use 5 of them for my mini book. I was afraid the advertising would still show up through any gesso that I covered them with so decided to use some scrapbook and mixed media papers to cover them instead. I pulled a piece of unloved scrapbook paper from my stash to create a masterboard for the covers, painting it with gesso and then randomly adding Distress Oxides in Vintage Photo and Spiced Marmalade.
Sprays with Distress Spray stain followed in Dried Marigold and Fossilized Amber, love how the DOX migrates up through the stain!
Random stenciling with Transparent Gloss texture paste through the Splash layering stencil was followed by more Distress sprays in shades of orange. The Flourish layering stencil was then used with Antique White acrylic paint over the background; the wet paint pulled up even more colour from the orange inks and DOX underneath it, turning the Antique White acrylic paint a lovely shade of dark orange.
A further spray with Spiced Marmalade Distress Spray stain followed after the paint resist stenciling but it was way to intense for me so I wiped it back with a rag, added some stamping with the Papillon stamp and Ground Espresso Archival ink and then stenciled with Nuvo gold mousse here and there through a honeycomb stencil. With the masterboard complete, I cut it up and adhered it to the outside of my front and back covers.
On to the resist techniques from the Compendium of Curiosities books. I typed out which volume and page I'd found each technique on and added it to the finished pages for a quick reference when I need some inspiration.
Perfect Distress was used for the front inside cover and Dabber Resist (or stamped paint resist) was used on the first page.
On the inside front cover, the Perspective butterfly was stamped with Barn Red Distress ink and covered with Perfect Pearls onto a background created with various shades of brown DI and then stamped with some Crafty Secrets stamps. For the Dabber resist page, the Distress Damask stamp was stamped with Tattered Rose Distress paint onto mixed media paper and then inked with Wild Honey and Abandoned Coral DI and overstamped with a little bird from Crafty Secrets again.
Shield your eyes for this one, it's very orange! Remnant Rub Resist on the left and Layered Stencil Embossing on the right.
For the Remnant Rub Resist page, Elements Remnant Rubs were applied onto mixed media paper and then covered with Spiced Marmalade and Ripe Persimmon Distress stains and overstamped with my beloved Umbrella Man. For the Layering Stencil page, the Grid Dot layering stencil was inked with Spiced Marmalade DI, clear embossed and the then whole page was inked with Carved Pumpkin DI and more stenciling followed through the Bubbles stencil with Barn Door DI. Some circle stamps from Tim Holtz's Mixed Media 101 stamp set finished it off.

For the Bleneded Batik page, the numbers from the Perspective stamp set were stamped and embossed over Wild Honey DI and then inked with Spiced Marmalade DI and overstamped with stamps from AALL & Create. I neglected to take an in process photo of the Shabby Chic technique but basecoated the page with Ground Espresso Distress paint, stamped and clear embossed the Rosette stamp and then covered it with Wild Honey Distress paint and overstamped it with some Wildflowers in Black Soot Archival ink.
And finally, the Rusted Enamel technique on the left and Perfect Distress again on the inside back cover.
Have to remember to use this Rusted Enamel technique more often, it's so effective! Rusty Hinge DI was applied first, then clear embossing powder was followed by Ground Espresso DI and I overstamped the background with a gears stamp from my stash.
I bound all the pages together using a single sheet bookbinding stitch that I saw in a YouTube video by SeaLemon, love how all of the pages lie perfectly flat with this binding stitch despite the thickness of the coasters.
